In 1941 during WW2 one of the German “Wolfpack” U Boat submarines spotted the British SS Gairsoppa after it had left the fleet to refuel. Mercilessly, the U-Boat Sub shot 3 torpedos at the SS Gairsoppa, missing with the first 2, then successfully striking with the final 3rd torpedo. The SS Gairsoppa sank within 20 minutes killing 85/86 crew members with 1 survivor to tell the gruesome story.
This unique pure 999 silver ingot from the WW2 shipwreck is one of the rare examples featuring His Majesty’s "HM Mint Bombay" Crown hallmark. These 462 ingots sat 3 miles down on the ocean floor for over 70 years, until the highly specialized Odyssey Exploration submarine was developed to recover the deepest shipwreck treasure known to date.
